A Talk on “Life and Legacy of B.G. Tilak”
On 22nd July at 4:00 PM, the Chandigarh Chapter of Vimarsh, in association with Swadeshi Shodh Sansthan, Chandigarh, organised an enlightening talk titled “B.G. Tilak: His Life and Legacy” at HRDC, Sector 25, Panjab University, Chandigarh. The event was organised to commemorate and reflect on the contributions of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, one of the most prominent leaders of India’s freedom struggle, remembered fondly as “Lokmanya Tilak”.
The session witnessed participation from more than 20 attendees, comprising scholars, academicians, students, and members of both Vimarsh and Swadeshi Shodh Sansthan. The event commenced with a warm welcome and introduction to the life of Tilak, followed by two thought-provoking lectures.
The first lecture was delivered by Dr. Itika Sharma, Associate Professor of Public Administration at Chandigarh University. She highlighted Tilak’s intellectual legacy, his unwavering commitment to Swaraj, and his emphasis on education as a tool for national awakening. She eloquently connected Tilak’s ideals with contemporary governance and civic responsibility.
The second address was given by Dr. Vikas Rana, Assistant Professor of Archaeology and Ancient Indian History at Panjab University. His talk focused on Tilak’s reinterpretation of Indian history and culture, particularly his contributions to the revival of ancient Indian thought and the strategic use of religious festivals for mass mobilisation during the freedom movement.
Both lectures were followed by a lively and engaging discussion, wherein participants shared insights, raised queries, and exchanged ideas on how Tilak’s philosophy remains relevant in today’s socio-political context.
